6 books every creative business owner needs to read in 2021

Everything I know, I’ve learned from other people.

It’s that plain simple.

The quickest, most effective (and cheapest!) way to invest in yourself and advance your creative business is through reading books (or listening to them!). In a world with so much information readily available, new free and paid online courses hitting the market every day, we can truly learn about anything and everything. But we don’t need THAT much info. We only need a simple, curated list of valuable resources in which you’ll highlight every other sentence and have so many notes.

As an avid reader, I’ve done the work for you, and in this blog post I bring you the 6 books you absolutely need to read in 2021 as a creative business owner!

As a kid, I’ve read more than 80 books every year. I was LIVING in the library. Today I’m not reading as much as 80, but I do get around 30ish books per year, sometimes up to 50. The books I’ve been reading for the past 3 to 5 years are all mostly business and self-help books, and 6 of them made a significant impact on how I view myself, the world, how to run my business, how to organise my schedule and everything in between.

If you’re looking forward to learn how to accelerate your creative business, make your own market, organise your life, form better habits and feel better about yourself, you’ve come to the right place.

These 6 books are all you need in 2021

(you don’t need to read them all before 2021 though ?).

1. Atomic Habits

Atomic Habits by James Clear

A brilliant book about habits, makes you realise the importance of doing a small step every day, because those steps accumulate and, in a year, make you 37,5% better off than what you were when you started.

It’s easy to read and doesn’t spend too much time on the theoretical part of habit forming, even though James explains it nicely. However, if you’d like to know more on how habits form, I recommend reading Charles Duhigg’sThe Power of Habit’.

2. Oversubscribed

Oversubscribed by Daniel Priestly

I feel Daniel Priestly and I would be best friends if I got the privilege to know him personally. In his book, Oversubscribed, he teaches you “how to get people lining up to do business with you”. I just got around reading this book within the last 2 weeks (after waiting for 2 months to get it delivered LOL – perks of living in Croatia), and I’ve found myself nodding through the majority of the book.

It’s telling a lot of the same things I have been continuously communicating to you – about pricing, comparison, that doing your best work doesn’t require the most time or the cheapest service, how you must feel confident etc.

But contrary to me, Daniel wrote a proper book and distilled all these ideas and backed them with evidence and examples. Truly do yourself a favour and order this book NOW.

PS – I’ll write a book too one day

3. Superfans

Superfans by Pat Flynn

As creative business owners, we’re almost all (if not all) building an online presence in order to promote our ventures. We get lost in the numbers of likes we get on Instagram, how many people follow us on TikTok, how much subscribers our mailing list has.

What Pat Flynn explains beautifully in his book is that there are real people behind those numbers. People who are looking to us to be a leader, to give advice, and to care.

I’ve seen so many successful online business owners recommend this book (rightfully so!), and likewise, I’m recommending it back to you now (rightfully so!).

I won’t try to sell it to you too much, I’ll just leave you with this sentence:
“You don’t need to change the entire world to build a successful business; you just need to change someone’s world.”

Seriously. Get this book.

4. You Are A Badass

You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero

Jen Sincero is an absolute queen of self-help if you ask me. This book is funny, humorous, real and honest. An absolute testament to what we CAN achieve if only we’d change our mindset.

With 2020 behind us and everything it threw at us, I feel this book is an absolute read for a solid pick-me-up to start off 2021 stronger than ever.

I read both this book and her other book tackling money mindset: ‘You Are A Badass at Making Money’, which I whole-heartedly recommend as well.

5. Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less

Essentialism by Greg McKeown

I read this book 3 times in the last 2 years, and I still keep coming back to it. I’ve listened to it as an audiobook through Audible (you can get a 30 day free trial with my link!), because I ADOOOOORE the author’s voice (he’s narrating the entire book – I love when authors do this, I feel you get much more connected to them!)

Greg makes a case for the “Way of the Essentialist”. If you feel overworked AND underutilized (at the same time), if you feel busy but not productive – this book is for you.

6. The Infinite Game

The Infinite Game by Simon Sinek

I need to preface this one that I am a Simon Sinek fangirl. I love that human so much and I think he’s the best ‘thing’ that happened to modern society. Okay, love expression over, back to business.

I read every of Simon’s books (Start With Why, Leaders Eat Last), but his most recent one – The Infinite Game, is the one I’d recommend to read first.

Why? Because business, and life, is not a finite game – even though we are all playing to win. When you realise this, and make peace that we’re all in an infinite game, you unlock a powerful way of thinking which will separate you from the competition and make you successful on your own terms (think Apple vs Microsoft).

PS Simon also has a brilliant course on How to Share Ideas that Inspire Action on Skillshare! ? Click here to get 14 days free trial (instead of only 7!) – and watch Simon’s course!

If you’d like more than these 6 books, I’m going to be creating my “Reading List” so that you can see what other books I’m reading and loving! Stay tuned! 😉

I wanna know – what is the ONE book recommendation you’d have for me? Comment below with your suggestion!
